Balayage and highlights are two of the most requested colour services — and two of the most confused. Both add lightness and dimension, but they're applied differently and suit different lifestyles.
Our colourists in Warsaw break down the difference so you can walk into your appointment knowing exactly what to ask for.
What are highlights?
Highlights are created by sectioning hair and saturating it from root to tip, usually using foils. This gives an even, uniform lift throughout the hair and a more structured, all-over brightness.
What is balayage?
Balayage is a freehand painting technique where colour is swept onto the surface of the hair, concentrated towards the mid-lengths and ends. The result is a soft, natural, sun-kissed gradient with a less defined regrowth line.
Maintenance
Balayage is lower maintenance — because it's softer at the root, it grows out gracefully and needs fewer salon visits. Traditional highlights show regrowth sooner and typically need topping up more often.
Which should you choose?
Choose balayage for a natural, low-maintenance, lived-in look. Choose highlights for brighter, more uniform colour or fuller grey blending. Many clients combine both — and a consultation is the best way to design the right result for your hair.
